Development Characteristics發展特色
The Department of Asia-Pacific Industrial and Business Management (APIBM), located in Kaohsiung, one of the hot spots of industry, trade, and transportation in the Asia-Pacific region, aims to train students with business management & leadership skills and help them cultivate sensitivity to Asia-Pacific industries. To assist local companies with investment in China and Southeast Asian countries to have an overview of the matters related to culture, geography, history, society and business of the invested countries in the hope of avoiding management problems caused by cultural misunderstanding, the Department sees the need to train skilled international management personnel with discipline, innovation and perspective. We are well equipped and experienced to upgrade the executive and technical staff of the invested country sent by Taiwanese business companies to the island for further education and training to facilitate the continuing development of the companies in the invested country.
The Department, established in August 2001, is the first of its kind on the island to provide programs which specialize in Asia-Pacific affairs. In accordance with the recurrent education policy of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the overall development of the University, a two-year undergraduate program for working professionals was launched in 2003. In accordance with national and industrial policies as well as the University’s development, a postgraduate program and a postgraduate program for working professionals were offered in 2006 and 2009 respectively.

本系是全台灣唯一同時包括工業管理與企業管理課程之國立大學學系,其設立目標為培育全方位管理人才,期盼學生具備工業管理與企業管理之專業知識,並且擁有台灣與亞太之國際視野,讓學生能夠成為跨專業與跨國界之間的連結,協助不同部門與不同文化之間的溝通與合作,也為自己在職場裡創造獨特無法被取代的價值。

為達到此跨專業與跨國界之目標,本系大學部課程規劃以三個學習模組為主,包括工業管理模組、企業管理模組以及亞太模組,無論學生屬於工業管理組或企業管理組,皆需規定修習完成三個模組課程。工業管理模組課程聚焦製造過程中之效率提升,主要課程包括例如作業管理與品質管理;企業管理模課程專注於其他管理功能例如人力資源、行銷、會計、策略與經濟。亞太模組主要探討亞太各國之文化、政治、經濟、產業政策與商業運作特性。除此之外,碩士班與碩專班之課程也都包括工管與企管相關科目,搭配學生特色題目研究論文,突顯畢業生跨專業特色價值,拓展職場升遷機會。

由於本系全方位之管理教育,畢業學生之發展相當多元與寬廣。工管專業學生許多擔任品質管理師與生產管理師相關職位;企管專業學生則多從事人力資源管理、採購人員、企劃行銷人員、業務人員或產品經理相關工作。就產業別而言,許多畢業生任職於優質高科技企業,例如半導體產業的台積電、日月光與恩智浦,其他常見之產業別為銀行業與零售服務產業。就工作地區而言,也有許多畢業生前往海外國定工作,例如日本、中國、香港、越南與歐美地區。

Goals
The department aims to cultivate today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders in industrial and business management for the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to the core curriculum, the Department provides an innovative learning environment for leadership training. Students will gain intellectual perspectives and practical tools for lifelong achievements, with access to the finest faculty and all the resources NUK offers. The establishment of the Department rests on three core values: believe in disciplines and principles; be honest and upright; respect and empathize with people. Based on them, we know where to position ourselves and how to achieve objectives in pursuit of excellence.

Future Outlook
The original idea underlying the establishment of the Department is to accommodate the development of regional economy and the changes of the industrial and business environment. We aim to train students to become professional management personnel with cultural awareness needed to work effectively in the fields of Asia-Pacific economy and overseas investment & management, helping them develop problem-solving skills, maintain sensitivity to environmental changes, and obtain practical experience. With rigid and professional training, the students are expected to have an international perspective and the ability to manage international corporations. The Department provides four groups of courses:

Leadership
 
A leader has to be broad-minded, courageous, insightful, humble, and persistent. He/she is well-versed in tapping talents of exceptional workers and nurtures them to become resourceful personalities. He/she is willing to take advice and keeps a habit of collecting information from all sources. Namely, a leader grows in character and wisdom based on how well he/she uses human resources. To cultivate a successful leader, this group of courses consists of An Introduction to Asia-Pacific Industrial and Business Management, Small and Medium Enterprise Management, Organizational Behavior, East Asian Business Management, and Strategic Management.
An International Vision for Asia-Pacific Affairs
 
This group emphasizes an all-round development in the principles, strategies, and investment of business management in the Asia-Pacific region, including Theories and Policies of International Trade, A Comparison of Competitiveness between Asia-Pacific Countries, International Business Management, International Marketing Management, International Financial Management, and Confucian Culture and Management Philosophy.
Innovation
 
With the rapid business globalization in this era, this group focuses on the exploration of new sci-tech policies as well as knowledge and innovation management in the Asia-Pacific region. Courses provided include Asia- Pacific Industrial Policies, Technology Management, R&D Management, Marketing Management, Knowledge Management, Information Technology and Competitive Strategies, Analysis of Green Materials Industry, and Nanotechnology and Applications.
Management Science
 
This group, stressing the development of industrial management technology, is composed of Management Science Models, Operations Research, Engineering Investment Analysis, Scheduling Theory, Computer Programming, Work System Analysis, Facility Planning, Production and Supply Chain Management, Strategic Support System, Commercial Automation, Systems Analysis, and Advanced Operations Management.

Also, the Department designs a one-year curriculum for Special Topics on Asia-Pacific Industrial and Business Management for students, who are required to conduct an in-depth exploration of issues related to Asia-Pacific industrial management to ensure that they are capable of integrating management theories and practices. The teaching focuses of the Department are on the theories and practices of business management, industrial management technology, and the integration of production and marketing. Equal weight is given to theories and practices, corresponding to contemporary tendency for management development and Asia-Pacific regional characteristics.
